This man literally puts the “Boring” in Never Boring Design Associates. As founder, President and Creative Director of NBDA, David Boring is the driving force behind the company. After working in the commercial sign industry for several years, Boring decided to strike out on his own in 1983.

Boring’s quick wit, tireless energy, and love of all things Modesto helped the company grow one employee and one department at a time. Spend five minutes across the conference room, dinner table, or desk from David Boring and you’ll see he’s anything but boring.

What work of art inspires you?

My favorite artist has always been my father John. His style of painting has had a tremendous affect on me.

How are you Never Boring?

Besides the Boring name being my birthright? In my youth, having the last name Boring was somewhat like the Johnny Cash song "A Boy Named Sue" - it forced me not to be THE Boring person in the room.

Inside every piece produced at NBDA is a little slice of Julie Orona’s creative genius. After leaving NBDA for a design position with Royal Robbins Outdoor and Travel Clothing Co., Orona returned to NBDA in 2004 to stay.

As VP/Art Director, Orona oversees the talents of eight graphic designers and marketing professionals – her management skills rival that of even the most seasoned cat herder. Orona’s infinite patience and level-headed logic often serve as the solid foundation of much of the creative mayhem that takes place inside the company’s walls.

What work of art inspires you?

Anything that I have to look at and try to figure out how it was done or what it means. If there is some mystery and I need to spend extra time on it, then I am in love.

Favorite Bands:

The Indigo Girls. The harmonies and differences in their voices really have me hooked.

How are you Never Boring?

There is more to me than meets the eye and it is for you to discover yourself.

Like ripples from a pond, laughter in the NBDA building often originates in the office of Donna Barker. After 25 years of experience in office management and bookkeeping, Barker continues to bring her sense of humor to work every day.

As Office Manager, Barker oversees the company’s finances and all things numbers. She is, quite possibly, the only person in the building qualified to use a calculator and the go-to person when troubleshooting marketing and design quandaries.

What work of art inspires you?

Auguste Rodin, he portrays humans with compassion and understanding.

Favorite Bands:

I enjoy all music from blues to rock. Rod Stewart is my favorite.

How are you Never Boring?

I have a 26 year old son and daughter and two identical twin sons that play college basketball. They all have a great sense of humor and make me laugh. Laughing is Never Boring.

Behind every great creative team lies an organized, analytical taskmaster - and at NBDA, that taskmaster is Yvette Marble. As the Office Assistant, Marble is responsible for keeping day-to-day operations running.

She earned her Associates Degree in Business Administration and has extensive experience in scheduling, supervision and customer service. Beneath Yvette’s kind a docile demeanor lie a lover of all things rock and roll and one demon of an organizer.

Favorite Bands:

Pink Floyd is my all time favorite, but I enjoy many varieties of rock music.

What Are your Hobbies?

Music: listening to, and playing guitar and piano.

After growing up in Japan, Aya Ueno attended college in the United States studying the arts at San Diego State University. With an acute eye for detail and an appreciation for Japanese aesthetics, Ueno brings a unique perspective to every piece she produces.

Her exuberant personality and can-do work ethic make her a very motivated addition to the NBDA team.

What are your hobbies?

I like cooking, even though I am not the best chef in the world.

How are you Never Boring?

I have a fusion of Japanese and American culture, and it never makes me bored.

Do not be fooled, beneath that doe-eyed, smiling exterior lies a fierce defender of all things branding - when it comes to guarding your corporate identity, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a more fierce proponent than Betty Gay.

After receiving her Bachelor of Fine Arts from California Polytechnic State University, Gay launched a career in graphic design, creating corporate identities for organizations in a variety of industries.

Gay’s hands-on experiences in printing, and extensive package design work have created a well-rounded arsenal in her line of brand defense.

How are you Never Boring?

I love a good challenge, and am always looking for new places to see and people to meet.

With an affinity for all things technical, Violet Whitworth is NBDA’s resident nerd; this, combined with her natural drawing talents have helped her create visionary websites and unique corporate logos.

Prior to joining the NBDA team, Whitworth worked as a freelance graphic and web designer and learned HTML, PHP and ASP languages. While gifted at yielding both a pen and a keyboard, Whitworth promises it is her skills at Halo that are unbeatable.

Favorite Bands:

KoRn, The Monkees, Dropkick Murphy/Flogging Molly, A Perfect Circle, Mindless Self Indulgence, Weezer, Sugarcult, MCR, Taproot, The Fray, and harder music.

What are your hobbies?

I love playing golf. Halo, Call of Duty, and Rainbow Six. No one can touch me at Halo!

How are you Never Boring?

I’m constantly learning about anything and everything (otherwise I get bored!) and will frequently inform you with odd news and facts that don’t pertain to your daily routine.

Daniel Uribe is a comedic ninja. Generally a man of few words, when you least expect it, Uribe strikes with a zinger, leaving you wondering what just hit you before the laughing begins.

Uribe joined the NBDA team after earning his Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from the Brooks Institute in Santa Barbara. Uribe has experience in motion graphics, package design, and After Effects. He brings a clean aesthetic and bit of his sharp sense of humor to many of the pieces he’s designed.

After years of in-house marketing and public relations positions, Courtney Considine joined the NBDA team in search of creative challenge. As Marketing Director, she is responsible for the strategic planning and oversight of all marketing and advertising client activities. With a diverse client roster, she has found a challenge of Indiana Jonesian proportions.

Considine received her Bachelor of Arts in Organizational Communications and has experience in copywriting, public relations, creative development, marketing and advertising. She is a big believer in sharing a good laugh at work, but like any good adventure-seeker, she’s not afraid to crack a whip every now and then.

Favorite Bands:

I love anything with gritty, crunchy guitars. Misfits, Queens of the Stone Age, Pink Floyd, Queen, and Muddy Waters. But I’m also a bit of a jazz nut.

What Are Your Hobbies?

I’ve played the guitar for about 15 years now. I’m also a little crafty – I love working with stained glass and I have inundated my friends with homemade hats and scarves.

How are you Never Boring?

I have had the benefit of numerous adventures in my lifetime (broken four bones, assisted in veterinary surgeries, had blue hair and a punk band, worked for a record label) and it’s helped me become quite the storyteller. If you’ve got five minutes, boy have I got a story for you!

Kristin Bowker has been on both sides of the sales conversation as both a coordinator and sale representative. With a decade of experience in sales and marketing in her tool belt, no project is too big for Bowker. Her career has included positions in television, banking, telecommunications, and print advertising.

As the Advertising Sales Coordinator, Bowker oversees all advertising sales for Progress and Bogey Magazines. Her can-do attitude and sales superpowers have proven to be an invaluable asset to both her publications and advertising clients.

How are you Never Boring?

I decide to look at things with a positive attitude (okay…most of the time) and enjoy life because each day is a gift!

A Modesto native, Ashley Flesuras returned to the Central Valley after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communication-Advertising from San Diego State University.

With an uncanny aptitude for organization, Flesuras has taken on the task of coordinating major projects for several clients. She currently manages monthly editorial content for both Progress and Bogey Magazine and serves as the VP of the Modesto Founders' BNI Group.

When Katie Floyd joined the NBDA team in 2006, saw the signs and it opened up her mind. Floyd has taken her graphic design talents to the large scale, fabricating custom marketing pieces in vinyl, canvas, magnet, and just about any material she can fit through the company’s large-scale printer.

As a student at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Floyd was awarded the Kirk Mill Ainesworth scholarship for black and white, and color photography. Her effervescent personality and bubbly spirit make her a joy to work with for both clients and co-workers.

What work of art inspires you?

The Dadist and Black Mountain College movements.

How are you Never Boring?

I try to find the beauty in everyday life.

There are those who say they "think outside of the box" and there’s Harold Avila – a man who literally thinks outside of the box while enhancing the outside of the box. After six years in the sign industry, you’ll see Avila's work on buildings and standalone signs throughout the city of Modesto.

Avila has experience in graphic design, tattoo art and is handy with a pen and paper. His production expertise and creativity have helped Avila turn blank canvasses throughout the city into works of art.

What work of art inspires you?

I really like the work of Salvador Dali, he has a unique way of taking average objects and arranging them into something truly interesting.

Favorite Bands:

I’m really into urban classic rock, El Chicano, Malo, The Animals, Lynard Shynard, Hendrix, War – these bands really set the bar for music.

How are you Never Boring?

It’s an awesome feeling to turn a blank canvas into a work of art.

When it comes to large format printers, size does matter. Roland is a descendant of a long line of quality custom color so its very easy to perform in this field.

This is Roland's first big job and loves being an integral player at Never Boring. His square feet stick to many types of surfaces from Windows, Vehicles, or even an entire wall.

Favorite Color:

Black (pantone hexachrome black c) - I get to use all my cartridges so no one feels left out!

How are you Never Boring?

I do everything bigger and better than the last guy.

Having grown up alongside the family business, Grant Boring is no stranger to the inner-workings of NBDA. After seeing the company’s evolution, Boring has come on board to launch the next logical step, the introduction of moving pictures via the Film and Multimedia Department.

After graduating from Video Symphony TV and Film School in Burbank, Boring returned to Modesto to launch video programming for the Modesto Nuts. He has since produced and edited award-winning films and brings and eye for all things film to the NBDA team.
